Many people in the wizard world seem to know of Harry Potter, the boy who lived. Every day I sit and read the paper, I only see his name in the headlines. It must be nice to be the sole child whom everyone adores instead of the boy whom everyone hates. So much in fact, that I have always been on the run since I was a boy. Even Dumbledore himself, being the “righteous” wizard that he is, tends to think that I should remain hidden from the world. Whether he believes I am a threat or not is unknown, but who am I to care otherwise?
“I believe that there is good in everyone Vruden. If I did not, I would not have you in my care.” Dumbledore spoke gracefully.
I did not turn towards him, instead I stared out the window into the bleak world. I watched as the trees swayed in the darkness as the bright moon shone above my head.
“Why are you doing this? Why not just give me to Voldemort instead.” I state.
I hear the floor boards squeak as Dumbledore shifts his weight. “I am doing this because I believe in you. I know how you…”
“You don’t know a bloody thing about me!” I yell, turning to face Dumbledore. His white beard is the only thing that shines within the room.
“You are too busy with your precious Potter! Sure he loses his family, sure he withstood Voldemort’s might, but how do you think I feel? I am nearly 16 professor and I’ve left my mother’s side to run from him. It’s because of my father that I am the villain by birth and all I want is to kill him.”
Dumbledore sighs, walking past me to look out of the window. “Hatred is what drew your father towards darkness Vruden. If you want to beat your father, you must find the good in the world and be strong to protect it. This is the only way you can change the world.”
I say nothing in response, but instead stare into the bare dim-lit room. The candle light flicks against the stone-cold walls as his words sink in. I love my mother. I haven’t seen her in years and every day I wish to see her again…happy and safe. My love for her is the reason that I wish to kill Voldemort. She will never be safe as long as he lives.
“I am nothing like my father professor. I don’t wish for power, for I was born with it. I don’t wish to be a Death Eater and I don’t wish to follow in my father’s footsteps,” I say, looking towards Dumbledore. “I want to defeat him for my mum. She’s the only reason I’ve stayed away.”
Dumbledore’s eyes twinkled through his glasses, “This is why I have come today, Vruden. I have decided to enroll you at Hogwarts.”
I stare hard at Dubmledore, half in surprise. “Hogwarts?! Are you mad?! Everyone there will surely want me gone! Not to mention no one will be safe at your school if I arrive.”
Dumbledore waves his hand at me, half smiling as if to tell me I was a silly boy. “Hogwarts is the safest place for you now. Voldemort is growing stronger by the day and this is precisely why you must stay within my care.”
Dumbledore walked near the door, with a pep in his step. “Also, we have the most delightful treats.”
I stood, confused by his cheerfulness. “You will be picked up by a dear friend of mine tomorrow bright and early. Do be ready will you.”
“Yes but…” I start, but by the time I spoke he was gone in a mist. Yet at this point in time, I could do nothing but laugh. He was always like that, never having time to stick around and have a decent conversation.
I moved towards the mirror, looking to see myself in the rusted glass. My unkept jet black hair came down to my ears as my blue eyes pierced through the glass. My face, firm but dirtied, seemed to match my worn clothes. Yet, I felt a sense of joy in that I was going to the famed Hogwarts. I have always wanted to learn more about magic and sometimes felt lacking in some subjects of interest. Dumbledore’s teachings have been well for the last couple of years, but finally it is my turn to show the world who I really am. For I, Vruden Riddle, will start my journey at last.
